Bonding Perfects Your Smile

Bonding offers a simple, effective solution if a tooth is chipped, discolored or damaged. Our Evans and Augusta, GA, family dentists, Dr. dental bondingScott Wingard and Dr. Caleb Morris, explain how bonding can correct minor issues that mar your smile.

What is bonding?

If you've ever used spackle or wood filler to repair a wall or piece of furniture, you already have a general idea of the way bonding works. Bonding involves applying flexible composite resin to teeth to fill chipped or damaged areas, but can also be used to hide flaws and even improve the shape of a tooth. Exposing the composite resin to a curing light hardens it in seconds. Once the material hardens, it becomes as strong as your natural tooth enamel.

Will bonding help my smile?

Bonding is an excellent solution for many types of flaws. It may be a good choice for you if you have:

  • A Broken Tooth: It may be possible to reattach the broken portion of your tooth with bonding material if the piece is fairly small. If the break is severe, you may need a root canal and crown instead.
  • A Chip: Small chips in teeth can be easily filled with composite resin in our Evans or Augusta office. Because composite resin is tinted to match common tooth shades, the treated area will easily blend in with the color of your tooth.
  • A Discolored Tooth: Bonding is often used to conceal discolorations caused by taking tetracycline during childhood or dental issues.
  • Gaps Between Your Teeth: Large gaps between teeth will require braces, but small ones can be filled quickly and easily with composite resin.
  • A Short Tooth: Grinding or clenching your teeth while you sleep can eventually wear down your tooth enamel, shortening your tooth. Short teeth aren't just a cosmetic issue but may also affect your bite. Luckily, you can restore the height of your teeth with bonding. After your short teeth are lengthened with bonding, you'll probably want to be fitted with a nightguard to prevent future damage.
  • An Unusually Shaped Tooth: The appearance of your smile can be affected even just one or two your teeth look a little odd. Bonding the tooth can straighten a slightly twisted or crooked tooth and make oddly shaped teeth look more uniform.
