You definitely have tooth replacement options. Find out more about dental implants and how they could give you back the smile you know and love.

How do dental implants work?

Implants are small metal restorations that, surprisingly enough, function just like tooth roots. Tooth roots are an important part of a tooth because they stimulate the jawbone to keep it healthy and strong. When a tooth falls out the jawbone no longer gets the stimulation it needs, which leads to jaw deterioration over time.

Fortunately, a dental implant can be placed within the jawbone to naturally bond together with the bone and tissue to take the place of your missing tooth’s roots and to provide the stimulation your jawbone needs to prevent bone loss. The sooner you seek dental implants and have them placed after you have lost your tooth the less bone loss you’ll experience.

How are implants placed?

Before we begin the implant process our Evans and Augusta, GA, implant dentist will need to make sure that you are a good candidate for treatment. You will need to go through a thorough oral evaluation that includes X-rays in order to check the health of your jawbone. If you are a good candidate for implants these are the steps you can expect.

Step 1: Getting the Implant: Under local anesthesia, we will open up the gums to reveal the jawbone. We will then create a small hole in the jawbone where we will place the implant. This procedure is performed right here in our office and you’ll be able to go home the same day.

Step 2: The Recovery Period: Even though the surgery is minor we will need to give your mouth several months to not only heal but also for the jawbone to naturally fuse together with the biocompatible titanium implant. The placement of the implant will also be a factor in how long it will take for the implant to completely fuse together with the bone and tissue.

Step 3: Placing an Abutment: In order for a dental crown to fit over the implant we will need to place an abutment, a structure that connects to the implant (that is lying under the gums) with the artificial tooth (that sits above the gums). The abutment is also placed under local anesthesia since we will need to open up the gums to attach the abutment to the metal implant.

Step 4: Place the Crown: Once the gums have healed, which will take several weeks, we will have you come back in so that we can cement a custom-made dental crown over the abutment to complete your restoration.
