Teething Tots

Nothing lights up a room like a baby's smile, but that precious, gummy grin could soon be followed by rough days ahead when those teeth start to erupt. By knowing the symptoms and the best remedies to provide relief, you can ease the pain of teething and keep your baby smiling.

Signs and Symptoms of teething: increased drooling, crying and irritability, inflamed gums and a mild fever are some of the more common symptoms that can affect your baby's sleep, eating habits, and temperment.

Remedies and Relief: Giving your child something to chew on, such as a cold, damp washcloth or firm rubber teething toy that has been chilled in the refrigerator. You may also gently massage their gums with your finger. Your pediatrician may also suggest acetaminophen or ibuprofen (for children over 6 months).

AVOID teething remedies that include benzocaine, as the FDA reports it can cause methemoglobinemia, this condition reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood and in some cases can cause death, particularly in children less than two years old.

Enjoy the time your child is a baby....they grow up so fast.....the days of teething will pass soon......
