What to Do When Your Implant Breaks

Would you know what to do if you have an issue with your dental implant? Evans and Augusta, GA, dentists Dr. Scott Wingard and Dr. implant restorationCaleb Morris discuss the steps you should take if you notice a problem and explain dental implant restoration options.

What parts of the dental implant can break?

Dental implants consist of the implant itself, a titanium post that bonds to your jawbone; an abutment and a dental crown. Although these three parts function as one unit, damage to any of them can cause problems.

What should I do if my implant breaks?

If you experience a problem, don't chew with the implant or manipulate it to see if you can fix it. Call our office during regular hours to schedule a priority appointment with our Evans or Augusta office. When you come to your appointment, be sure to bring any broken parts of your implant.

What types of dental implant problems can occur?

When problems occur, they're often due to:

  • A Broken Implant: Broken implants aren't very common, but do occur occasionally. If your implant breaks, you'll need to receive a new one. In some cases, bone grafts may be needed to increase your jawbone depth before you can receive your new implant. Although you may not have needed bone grafts initially, these step may be necessary after an implant has broken.
  • Loose Implant: Loose implants can occur due to several reasons. Your implant may become loose if you grind your teeth at night or if you've developed an infection called periodontitis. Other causes can include gum disease or incomplete bonding. Addressing the cause of the implant failure can help you avoid future problems. For example, if you grind your teeth, wearing a nightguard while you sleep can prevent damage to your new implant.
  • Crown Issues: Loose or broken crowns can be repaired or replaced. Sometimes, loose crowns can be caused by problems with the abutment screw that connects the crown to the dental implant. Replacing the screw can solve the problem. If your crown is faulty, it will need to be replaced.

Prompt dental implant restoration is essential if you break your implant. Schedule an appointment with dentists Drs. Scott Wingard and Caleb Morris by calling (706) 303-8283 for the Evans, GA, office or (706) 738-4723 for the Augusta office if you experience an implant issue.
