Do You Have Gingivitis?

Signs of gingivitis: Red and swollen gums that can bleed when brushing and flossing.

Knowing how to treat gingivitis is not necessarily something most of us think about on a regular basis. But gingivitis happens to millions of people each year. There are four steps that are fairly simple and effective for how to treat gingivitis:

Step1.: Get a professional cleaning. Once plaque hardens and turns into tartar, it can't be removed with regular brushing. A dental hygienist will use instruments that remove tartar build-up.

Step 2.: Brush better. Brush for at least 2 minutes reaching all areas of the mouth at least 2 times a day. Brush at the base of the gums in a soft circular motion using a soft bristled brush.

Step 3.: Floss diligently. Flossing removes food particles and plaque, and it also stimulates and strengthens your gums.

Step 4.:Rinse 2 times a day with an ADA approved mouthrinse. Certain rinses have ingredients that kill the bacteria that live in the plaque that causes gingivitis.

Knowing how to treat gingivitis can help you quickly heal your gums and return to great oral health. It's important to remember that prevention is the best way to avoid gingivitis altogether. If you implement each of the steps above, you may be able to prevent gingivitis before it occurs.
