Sealants - Not Just for Kids

Studies have shown that 95% of all adults will develop a cavity at least once in their lives. If not treated early, this can lead to patients getting fillings, or even root canals. Since most people want to avoid having a tooth filled or a root canal performed at all costs, an easy preventative solution is available. Sealants on teeth help protect them from cavities, just like a sealant on a surface in your home.Sealants

What is a sealant?
A sealant is a thin coating brushed onto the teeth that is used to create a barrier between the teeth and bacteria that can cause decay. Since the molars have deeper grooves than the rest of the teeth, they are a prime target for bacteria, and are where most cavities occur. For this reason, sealants are most often applied to the molars.

Aren’t sealants for children?
Typically, sealants are used in children to help prevent cavities in their baby teeth or newly erupted teeth. However, adults can also benefit from having their teeth sealed. Adults with deeply ridged or pitted molars are great candidates for sealants. These deep areas are much more prone to cavities than teeth with smoother surfaces, since they are easier to reach while cleaning. The sealant builds up those depressions and ridges, both creating a barrier and making the surface of the tooth easier for a toothbrush bristle or mouthwash to get to.

How is a sealant applied?
The teeth are first cleaned thoroughly, then dried one by one. An acid solution is then applied to the teeth to create a rougher surface for the sealant to attach to. The teeth are once again rinsed and dried thoroughly. The sealant is then brushed onto the enamel of each tooth being sealed, then cured with a special light used to harden the materials in the sealant and promote proper bonding with the teeth.

Sealants generally last for around 10 years, but should be checked periodically for chips or wear. The best way to prevent decay in teeth is with regular dental examinations.
